This class is required as a general ed for the Nursing program. Although this course is required, I find aspects of it interesting. We communicate with something or someone everyday whether it's at work or school or at home. The most interesting type of communication is noise. We hear noise everywhere, but sometimes we get so used to a noise that we don't hear it or block it out. Seeing as though in the healthcare industry communication is key whether it's to know what part of the body has pain or what medication someone needs to be on. A simple misunderstanding can be life changing to both staff and patients. I hope to improve every skill that I, from public communication to intrapersonal communication, can to help me be a better understood nurse. It is very hard to know what is going on when either you or the other person has bad communication. I am a CNA and I had recently worked in a nursing home prior to working in the home health care system. The people that I take care of in their homes ususally have descent communication skills versus the nursing home where some weren't sure where they were or who they were. It is very challenging to make someone satisfied or content when you don't know what's wrong with them. Improving my communication skills would greatly benefit me not only now, but also in the future.

  1. Hi Chelsea,

I think you will find the non-verbal communication chapter to be especially interesting because of your experience working in a nursing home. As a CNA or nurse, you do or will rely heavily on non-verbal communication to understand what your patients may need.
