LP 10 Week 6
My speech was on Jospeh Stalin. I would have to say that I did descent on making eye contact, but the more eye contact the better! I think I did well with not rocking back and forth and using some hand gestures, the notecards make it a bit more difficult to use a lot of hand gestures. I did use credible sources, but I did not cite them orally (wasn't quite sure how to). I believe that the best way to organize my information was chronologically, which is what I did. I think that I was well prepared with my speech and information and I did practice it quite a few time. I had a little extra practice when the battery died and the card ran out of space during my last sentance! :) I think that I do need to work on remembering to speak slower and a little more clear.

LP 10- Week 3
I chose Joseph Stalin because I think that he is a very interesting man! From the start of his childhood and the way he grew up, I believe that your childhood has a major affect of your personality and the way you view the world and people. Especially since he turned a country into a world power, that takes a man who has inferiority issues, and he definitely did!
Thesis Statement: Joseph Stalin a man that had a dysnfunctional childhood, which lead him to turn a country into a world power at any cost.

This article contains a lot of information on Nelson Mandela. It gives dates of important events and information about his schooling and what he did throught his life and his impact on Africa and the world. It doesn't go into great detail of everything he did, but it at least gives an outline which is a good start!

I was born in 1994, meaning that I am part of the Generation Y or "The Millenials."
I think that my generation could be considered the "technology" generation as of right now. There are so many different things coming out every month, such as the iPhone 5. Even going back a little into the late 1990's when the first cell phones came out. I remember my mom's first cell phone, it was one that had to be plugged into the cigarette lighter in the car. Now you can get your e-mail and internet on your phone. The rate of technology growth is rapidly increasing. There is so much more diversity and globalization that it makes it easier to talk to someone in China or communicate without being hostile. Although there is still ehnocentrism, I think that it has gotten a lot better than it was in previous generations. I think that our generation is the most accepting of sexuality and race than previous generations. The increase in technology and communication leads to different styles and beliefs in raising children. Everyone has their own beliefs and values and that of course will always change between people. Not only does the generation that someone grows up in as well as where they grow up can influence their beliefs and values. I have noticed that people that grow up in the city versus people that grow up in the country have very different values and even priorities. I think your values are based upon your parents as well as how you view the world and the people in it.
If you can value yourself, than you can value others as well. If you can value other's talents then it can make life easier, especially in our fast-paced, diverse world.

A relatioship, everyone has relationships in their life whether it's family, a boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, co-worker, or friend. A relationship by definition is a meaningful, dyadic, person-to-person connection in which two interdependent people engage in communication of a persoanl nature, develop a shared history, and try to meet each other's social needs. The way we communicate in any relationship can determine whether that relationship will end in termination or not.
In any relationship there is some sort of conflict, it could be about someone not taking out the garabage or about a financial situation. Some people would rather talk about the conflict and some would rather say nothing at all. There have been times in my life where I have done both. Sometimes I have a hard time explaing or expressing my feeling to others and in one of my relationships I kept my real feeling inside to avoid conflict, but in the end the reason that there was conflict in the first place was because I hid my feelings. Due to my hidden feeling, the person that I had a relationship with lied to me, which made more conflict. Eventually it got to the point where I couldn't handle the lying and going behind my back, so the relationship resulted being terminated.
On the opposing side of me hiding my feeling, eventually I burst which is why it is never good to hold true feeling inside. A different relationship of mine with a family member got to that point of bursting. I eventually decided to speak up because I couldn't handle the anger I felt along with the stress. So, we started having a conversation, but it ended in screaming and walking away. After we both cooled off and thought straight, we met up again and had an actual conversation. We both needed to be understanding and talk about how we both felt. After our conversation, we both kept our word about working harder on our relationship.
I believe that communication is really the key to any relationship in life. If you don't communicate with eachother, then you won't know what the other person is thinking or feeling. I have personally learned that if you express your feeling and tell the truth it's so much easier to have a closer relationship with people in your life.

Listening is one of the skills that everyone but may not use. The definition that Julian gives for listening is making meaing from sound. Without making meaning it, as the old saying goes, "goes in one ear and out the other." If we don't apply listening in a conversation, then the conversation is pointless. If we don't listen to eachother, then we don't understand eachother.
Julian's main point of his speach was that people are losing their listening. They are not literally losing it as an ability, but they are not practicing it enough. If you don't practice something over and over again then you will never be good at it. Unless it comes naturally, which for some people it does. I completely agree with his points. There are so many different noises and sounds in our world that we rarely hear silence. When we do hear silence it can often be awkward or uncomfortable so we try to fill in the silence with any type of noise. So since that is the case, I tried the experiment of sitting in complete silence for three minutes a day. He said that it should recalibrate, so that we may hear the quiet again. When I tried this, it was a very different feeling for me. I am used to constantly hearing noises whether it be a fan on my laptop or a drawer closing in the kitchen. It is not only an unknown feeling, but also an unknown happening. Just to try to find a place that is completely silent is a challenge within itself. When I did find that complete silence, it was refreshing. You can let your mind go wild and think about things in depth without being distracted by someone or something. It was actually incredible. I am also a person who can't sit still, so just sitting or laying down for three minutes without a worry or something to finish was an experience by itself. All of the different excersises that he said can help by making you focus on one thing. If you can focus on one thing even when there are other noises, then you can apply that skill while having a conversation. You can listen to one person and really hear what they are saying while you block out the chatter or noises.
It is a challenge for someone to hear someone over all the background noise in our lives, but it is an even bigger challenge to really listen to someone and understand what they are trying to say. Everyone has something to say in life, but a lot of the time it is mixed in with the constant chatter and not heard. Julian Treasure made some very good points that everyone should hear and really think about.

Nonverbal communication designates all the kinds of human messafges and responses not expressed in words. Even when someone is not talking, they are communicating somehow.
In this Hanes commercial, Cuba Gooding can't believe how soft Michael Jordan's shirt is. The company is trying to put an emphasis on how soft and comfortable the shirts are. So, of course they use famous people to represent the company in order to make an impact on people's decision of what brand to buy. This certain commercial was targeted towards men, that is why they had Michael Jordan and Cuba Gooding in it. They did this also to prove to men that even big, athletic males can and should wear Hanes. Some of the nonverbal cues such as facial expression and posture/body position were used. Cuba Gooding acts like he is hearing everything and looks around, but he actually doesn't and that is proven once he gets into the room with Michael and he runs up to him and hugs him. Michael's facial expression when Cuba hugs him is saying that he wants Cuba to get off of him. Hanes is trying to make the viewer want to buy their shirts because they are soft and comfortable and Michael Jordan wears them, so why shouldn't you? The company especially pays attention to making sure that you know the shirts are comfortable, so that you will want to buy them. Hanes also makes sure to have Michael and Cuba dressed nicely and cleanly shaven to put off a clean cut look.
There are so many different ways to express yourself, whether its written commnication, verbal communication, or nonverbal communication. Sometimes we are saying something with our eyes, posture, body language, of facial expression without even knowing that we are.

Thang. Gansta. G-unit. Thug life. Naw mean? Everyone has their own version of their language, whether it is a southern twang, proper city slickers, or gangster swag. It doesn't even have to be that exagerated, some people just have their own way of putting words together.
I read the article "Hip Hop Nation," which was very interesting to me because I grew up listening to everything from country to rap. In a way they are the same, not by the lyrics or beats but by the story they are trying to tell. The stories are definitely different, but all in the same they are just getting their story told by singing them or rapping them. It was very interesting how they told about the slaves and drums. If you can't communicate by talking then you must find a different way, and they did. I knew there was a movement called "Black noise," but I did not know that it was later called the "global noise." That is a good way to put it though! It was very fascinating to hear the side of the rapper, which is something we don't always hear. I find the way that people talk and think to be very interesting, and I love hearing their side of the story. It's only fair, right? I can use the information to help myself remember that everyone has a story, and although they may not be able to sing it or rap it there is something beyond the surface that makes everyone who they are and how they act. In my profession, I have to be able to look beyond the surface and have understanding. My patients also may not be able to verbally communicate with me and I have to find a different way to find out what is going on.
There are many ways people will tell their story, you just have to be willing to hear it without judging it. Judging is the easiest thing to do, but it is not fair to anyone even if they tell their story by rapping or singing. That may be the only way they feel comfortable telling it.

A stereotype is a "category" that you are put into by someone who doesn't really know you or who you are as a person. We have a perception of someone and use that experience to help us decide what category they will be put in. The range of stereotypes can go from jocks to nerds to racial and sexist stereotypes.
People have probably used selective retention about me and base their thoughts about me from my past as well as present. The famous saying of first impressions mean everything. Well, that may be mostly true, but it is slightly off. Many first impressions, as I have experienced have been wrong. The first time we meet someone we automatically judge them and put them into a category, sometimes even unconciously. It is hard to say what someone would stereotype me as because i'm sure I would change categories of stereotypes once someone got to know me. The first impression stereotype may be that I am athletic, a little on the preppy side, and sassy. These can all be true at some points, but not all the time. See that's what peoples mistakes are the first time they meet someone, they see the shell of the person, but not the entire person. I have many sides to me, so saying that something is completely untrue would be a lie. At some point in our lives we will somehow fit into most categories. The first time you meet someone and you judge them, it is hard to communicate with them because you already have an idea in your head about them so they may not even have a fair chance with you. An advantage of stereotyping is if you feel like you may be in the same stereotype as someone else then that may give you a boost to talk to them or actually give them a chance. A disadvantage of stereotyping is the fact that you are judging someone based on their looks or what you have heard about them and not who they really are.
No matter what stereotype someone is put in, they don't have to be that stereotype. People need to be themselves and be happy with that, without someone pressuring them to look a certain way or act a certain way. A stereotype is nothing but a judgement of someone you don't know, and just because you don't know them, doesn't mean you can act like you are better than them or they are better than you.

Learning Plan 2
Replacement Girlfriend Wanted!!!
A girlfriend by definition is a frequent or regular female companion in a romantic or sexual relationship. To be my replacement you must be a fighter, a lover, a caring person, and a best friend. It is not as simple as it sounds, you be willing to work hard and love unconditionally. You must be able to accept him along with all of his flaws, and some flaws may drive you insane. You must find a way to get past those and realize you also have flaws that may drive him insane. It must be a mutual acceptance. To be able to accept his flaws, you must first accept yourself. If you have a good self-concept, then it will become a self-fufilling prophecy, which could be the Pygmalion effect. You should want to be a better person because of him, he should also make you feel good about yourself causing your self-esteem to increase. The media may tell you what a good girlfriend should be, but don't be fooled. Actors on television are with eachother for moments, not for a long term relationship. You must keep in mind the Johari Window when being a girlfriend. Most people know that you have to fight for eachother in a relationship, otherwise it has the chance of not working. Some of the flaws you have, you are blind to. Although in a good relationship you will find ways to tell eachother the things that you are not aware of. A requirment to replace me is that you must be honest and tell the truth, no matter how bad your past and secrets are. If you can't trust eachother then you have nothing. Be aware though, self-disclosure will kill your relationship. If he trusts you enough to tell you his deepest secrets then do not tell others. The last part of the Johari Window is the unknown. There is not much to tell about this box, except that you must be willing to leave that window open. You have secrets that you don't even know you have. When it comes to the time when more and more things are revealed from this box, you jmust be willing to share with your loved one. The keys to a good relationship are trust, honesty, integrity, and most of all love. Love yourself as well as your boyfriend.

This class is required as a general ed for the Nursing program. Although this course is required, I find aspects of it interesting. We communicate with something or someone everyday whether it's at work or school or at home. The most interesting type of communication is noise. We hear noise everywhere, but sometimes we get so used to a noise that we don't hear it or block it out. Seeing as though in the healthcare industry communication is key whether it's to know what part of the body has pain or what medication someone needs to be on. A simple misunderstanding can be life changing to both staff and patients. I hope to improve every skill that I, from public communication to intrapersonal communication, can to help me be a better understood nurse. It is very hard to know what is going on when either you or the other person has bad communication. I am a CNA and I had recently worked in a nursing home prior to working in the home health care system. The people that I take care of in their homes ususally have descent communication skills versus the nursing home where some weren't sure where they were or who they were. It is very challenging to make someone satisfied or content when you don't know what's wrong with them. Improving my communication skills would greatly benefit me not only now, but also in the future.
